FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Why wax in the first place?

A: Waxing is one of the best ways to temporarily remove unwanted hair. It is more effective than shaving because it removes hair from the roots, not just from the skin’s surface. Over time, hair in waxed areas re-grows lighter and sparser or not at all.

Even fine hair shadows the face, distorting and aging your features. Waxing the brows opens up the eyes, providing a non-surgical facelift. You keep the hair on your head well-maintained, so why not everywhere else?

Q: What is the effect on the skin?

A: As dead skin cells are removed in this process the skin can feel quite smooth afterwards. The waxing action does cause the skin to sting and many find a soothing skin healing cream to be helpful afterwards. Some persons find the skin reacts with redness and bumps which disappear after a few minutes.

Q: What areas of the body can be waxed?

A: The wax can be used on almost any part of the body as needed. It is wise to test a small area first for sensitivity. Some frequently waxed areas for women are legs, underarms, bikini line, eyebrows and face. For men: chest, leg, arms, and back. The exceptions for waxing are beards, eyelashes.

Q: How long will the results last?

A: After a client’s first waxing, the results can last 3 to 6 weeks depending on the individual’s hair re-growth. In most cases, hair growth is minimal during the first week or two and noticeably increases in the third and fourth week. Heat stimulates hair growth; therefore hair grows quicker in the summer than in the winter. With regular waxing the length of time between treatments will increase. Continued waxing results in sparse hair re-growth.

Q: Will the hair grow back thicker?

A: Absolutely not. It might seem so because you will be accustomed to a hairless zone, and new hair will be intolerable. Usually, re-growth will be finer, thinner and slower. Eventually, hair growth may stop altogether.

Q: Are there any health precautions to keep in mind?

A: VERY IMPORTANT: Some physicians do not recommend waxing for persons suffering from diabetes or who have varicose veins or poor circulation, psoriasis or other skin conditions as they are more susceptible to infection. If you are unsure, ask you physician whether you can go ahead with a wax.

Q: Are there any medication precautions to keep in mind?

A: VERY IMPORTANT: Waxing is never done on clients taking Accutane and is not recommended for clients taking Retin A, Renova, Differin or other types of skin thinning acne medications. Please read the label carefully and consult your dermatologist if you are taking any medication or using any topical cream that contains these medications.

Q: What are the possible side effects of waxing and how can they be minimized?

A: Although we can not predict or guarantee who may react, most clients do not experience reactions beyond redness and minor irritation. Hair may break at the root during waxing, causing some hairs to grow out faster. Please follow these guidelines to minimize irritation and possible break outs.

            • Avoid the sun immediately after waxing and please wear sun screen; recently waxed areas are
prone to hyper pigmentation (permanent darkening of the skin) if exposed to the sun.
            • Avoid saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools and other heated sources for at least 48 hours.
            • Do not use exfoliating products (AHAs, scrubs, etc) and loofas for at least 24 hours after waxing.
            • Avoid tight clothing after waxing, especially in the waxed areas. Tight clothing may result in
            irritation and ingrown hairs
            • Regular exfoliation may be helpful especially on leg and arm areas.

Q: How long does waxing take?

A: Depending on the body part and the density of the hair growth, your waxing appointment
will take between fifteen minutes and one hour.

Q: How should I prepare, can I put lotion on, can I wear makeup or
does the area to be waxed only need to be clean?

A: Do not apply lotion before waxing, the area needs to be clean and dry, no makeup etc. Also, one should not be waxed after any kind of facial treatment or dermatology procedure such as a chemical peel etc, only before the procedure. In addition, the client should notify Beauty of Wax of any other skin treatment being used such as Retin A, etc.

Q: Should I shave or trim the area? This would be for bikini or Brazilian….

A: No, do not shave the area; the professional at Beauty of Wax will shave the area if necessary. Hair to be waxed should be at least ¼ inch long for waxing to be successful.

Q: Afterwards, will the area be red or swollen, what can I do to prevent this, how long will it stay that way?

A: Typically, the area may be red initially, could be slightly swollen. The client may want to use Aloe Vera lotion or gel to help sooth the area. Or, there are products available at Beauty of Wax that Maribel recommends for skin aftercare.

Q: Should I shower or wash the area right away? Is there something special to wash with to prevent in-grown hairs? Such as a loofah or maybe a sandy scrub, or are these materials too harsh to use on just waxed skin?

A: The client is welcome to shower or wash the area after being waxed. Maribel recommends using a loofah sponge to gently scrub the waxed area (in circles) generally 3 times per week after re growth of the hair.

Q: After being waxed, there are sometimes small particles of wax left behind, what is the easiest way to remove them, especially on delicate areas?

A: Maribel recommends using a bit of baby oil to help remove/lift any remaining bit of wax.

Q: Are there any additional tips I should know to make my session more comfortable/pleasant?

A: Sometimes there is a physical reaction that takes place within the body in response to feeing a bit of discomfort or pain. It is common for increased perspiration to occur. Though a clean surface and hygienic paper barrier is provided for each individual client, some clients bring a large beach towel to lie on. This suggestion has been known to make clients feel more at ease and comfortable during the waxing process.
